8 Overlooked Useful YouTube Tools

When most people think about YouTube they think sharing videos and or about all of the videos they can discover. Most people don't think about the useful editing tools that are built into YouTube. The YouTube video editor has some useful features for teachers and students.

1. Create photo slideshows. The YouTube photo slideshow creation tools allow you to specify the length of time that each image is displayed for. After uploading your images you can use the annotations tool to add as much text as you like to each frame of your video. Directions for creating a YouTube photo slideshow are available here.

2. Create slow-motion videos. The most recent addition to the YouTube editing tools is an option to record videos with a regular speed camera and then turn that into a slow-motion video. Directions for doing this are available here.

3. Use annotations to create a linked series of videos (or choose your own adventure videos). Directions for doing this are available here.

4. Blurring faces in your videos. Directions are available here.

5. Stabilizing shaky footage and adding color/ light filters to your videos.

6. Add captions to your videos.

7. Add a music track to your video. 

8. Hide your video from public search results.Under the privacy settings select "unlisted" or "private."

Stossel in the Classroom: Educational Videos on Economics and Business.

The Stossel in the Classroom program is sponsored by the Center for Independent Thought, an IRS 501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit educational foundation that serves as the parent foundation for a number of educational activities.
Stossel in the Classroom offers a new DVD free to teachers each school year. The DVDs include video segments from John Stossel's television programs and specials, along with a teacher guide with lesson plans and ideas for complementary activities.

5 Good Lesson Plans for Teaching Copyright

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has published a set of comprehensive lesson plans about copyright simply titled Teaching Copyright. Teaching Copyright contains five lesson plans. Each lesson plan includes printable worksheets, readings, and suggested activities. For teachers looking for a little more information than is available in the lesson plans, the EFF has a good list of additional resources including videos on the topics of copyright and fair use.  Copyright on Campus - A Six Minute Exploration of the Nuances of Copyright

Copyright and Fair Use are cloudy areas for many students and educators to try to navigate. This evening I found Copyright on Campus which is a six minute cartoon that does a nice job of explaining many of the nuances of copyright as it applies to educators. While the explanations are given for a collegiate setting they could be applied to K-12 too. The video is embedded below.

Depression Quest - An Interactive Story to Learn About Depression

Depression Quest is a website that features an interactive story designed to educate people about depression. The story puts you in the place of a twenty-something person that is struggling with depression. Throughout the story you are presented with choices to make that influence the next phase of the story. The story has 150 different scenarios and five possible outcomes at the end based on the choices you make as you read through the story.

Applications for Education
Depression Quest is a site that I would love to see high school students use in their health classes. The scenarios are very realistic and I know that some students will relate very strongly to some of the scenarios. For other students the scenarios will provide them with some understanding of what depression sufferers feel. All students completing the story will learn about the signs of depression
